Business Is My Favorite Video Game

I used to love video games when I was a kid. I used to spend hours playing games like Final Fantasy, Zelda, Mario and many others as I built up my characters and searched for new items. What I didn't realize at the time was that business is a lot like a good video game. It has all the elements one would expect to find in an game: level ups, money, team-mates, bosses, new worlds, hidden items, side-quests and all the other sweet stuff. The part that makes business better than any video game I've ever played is that the rewards are much greater than any that you will ever find in a mere game (the consequences are also much greater as well).

Level Ups

Anybody who has played an RPG or any other type of adventure type game is familiar with leveling up their main character and team. You basically start out at Level 1 where you are super basic and have no special attacks or weapons. You have hardly any health and can only take on extremely weak opponents and challenges. You have to slowly work your way up to becoming super leveled up to where you can easily own all your opponents with one attack.

This same thing happens in business. You start as just some n00b that has very little resources and not much knowledge in the business. You start finding things that need to be taken care of and you find ways to fix problems. You look for ways to improve things and to increase you value (AKA a Level Up). As you face more battles (problems, challenges, people, etc) you start to become smarter and stronger. With time you start to develop systems and find ways to make things more efficient. You eventually grow stronger and stronger and become able to do many more things than you could do just a year ago. You start to grow and succeed and as a result your business begins to grow and succeed. Before long you are playing with the big boys throwing down Knights of the Round and Omnislash as you go for the win.

Money

Just like how RPGs have their own money system, business too has its own money system. In order to get new weapons and magic it sometimes costs a lot of money in video games. You can't get your new weapon until you have won many battles and earned many money units because of it. The same thing happens in business. You can't buy the 10 box cluster until you have first made due with the single server for some time. Once you finally have won all the battles you can with your small server you finally save up enough money to upgrade to the next largest size. Now you can take on even tougher opponents AKA more traffic.

Conclusion

The main difference between a video game and a business is that a video game takes less time to win, and has less rewards and less consequences. Other than these two things there are a lot of core similarities. So what are you waiting for?
