Just Because It's Social Online Doesn't Mean It's Productive

I find it kind of funny how caught up most people get with social sites like Facebook and Twitter. Socializing is cool and everything, but I think most people forget that just because you're socializing online doesn't mean you're being productive.

The same way going around and socializing with friends can waste a lot of time in everyday affairs, the same can be said in the online world. Just a thought.

Google and/or Yahoo Should Force Users to Switch From Internet Explorer

It seems to me like it would be a pretty good idea if one of the most popular sites like Google or Yahoo was to tell all users who are running IE6 and below, or even any version of IE to upgrade to Firefox or Chrome.

You Know You're An Internet Marketer When...

Here's a fun one for all those Internet Marketers out there that are into working hard and working smart:

  1. You have a hard time contributing to a site you don't own
  2. All your links are cloaked
  3. You can accurately estimate a site's traffic in less than a minute
  4. You can accurately estimate a site's earnings in less than a minute
  5. You are always looking for ways to scale
  6. You are always looking for ways to automate
  7. You can create a new site in less than a minute
  8. You own over 100 domains

jQuery Is The New Flash

Make no mistake about it: Javascript has pretty much replaced Flash on every level except video. If you are looking to animate, hide, load, move or pretty much do anything else with elements on your page javascript is clearly the way to go, and jQuery is like the actionscript of javascript.

Drupal CDN & Static File Server - The Amazon S3 Way

If you build quality sites that attract a large number of visitors and interaction there eventually will come a point when you have to start looking for ways to offload your files and bring down your server overhead. I have been looking into the CDN issue off and on for the past 6 months. Recently I decided it was time to get something dialed in and move forward. I wanted something that required the least number of hacks and was easy and scalable. This post isn't meant to be an end all to Drupal and CDNs, but rather just some insight into the way I have tackled this issue for the time being.

Domainers Are n00bs When It Comes To SEO

I've seen this for years: Domainers will swipe up some solid Internet estate and then just let it chill in their GoDaddy account and wait for the big sale 10 years down the line. That's cool and all, but they're missing out on a lot more. The more savvy domainers will park their domains with ads, but in most cases these pages return improper headers and do very little for getting indexed in search engines - and you guessed it, being indexed in the search engines is a really big deal, especially if you have good domain names that you're just sitting on.

Drupal Ecommerce VS Ubercart - Which Shopping Cart Is Better?

Anybody who uses Drupal and is looking to sell products will ultimately come to this question. I'm gonna cut straight to the chase and say the better cart is Ubercart. I have used both and only have great things to say about Ubercart. I don't think it comes down to the type or size of the site you are building either. I'd use Ubercart for any site, large or small, auctions or no auctions, extreme customization or just plain and simple.

Let's start with what you SHOULDN'T use:

Drupal Ecommerce

No-Follow, PageRank, Article Submissions, Low Competition Niches and All The Other BS-EO

A Large Problem With Most Internet / Tech Companies

A huge disconnect I find with most tech companies is that their technical side is on a different page than the leadership. In most cases the CEOs and leaders know nothing about technical things and tech guys know nothing about good leadership. This would be okay if the two were able to leverage each others strengths, but in most cases that's just not what happens.

Advice For A Beginner Starting In The Web / Internet Business

I recently received the following question:

Do you have any advice for a beginner starting in the web business?

I have quite a bit I'd like to share on this so I figured I'd write a post on it.

A few ways to make money online

  • Service work non-residual (web design, programming, consulting)
  • Service work residual (hosting, SEO, PPC management)
  • Content sites (adsense, affiliate offers, banners)
  • Community sites (memberships)
  • Ecommerce sites (dropship, warehouse)
