I recently received the following question:
Do you have any advice for a beginner starting in the web business?
I have quite a bit I'd like to share on this so I figured I'd write a post on it.
A few ways to make money online
- Service work non-residual (web design, programming, consulting)
- Service work residual (hosting, SEO, PPC management)
- Content sites (adsense, affiliate offers, banners)
- Community sites (memberships)
- Ecommerce sites (dropship, warehouse)
- Viral sites (a quick cash flip ie: http://www.milliondollarhomepage.com)
- Tons of other options depending how creative you want to get
Hard Work + Time = Success
I would say that it all comes down to hard work and time. There are really no easy ways to start making money online (or offline) like most people claim. If you want to start making money online you are going to have to really want it and work hard for it. It will probably take you a few years to get up to speed on most of this stuff if you are just starting out. I would recommend spending the next few years or so just learning as much as you can about everything online, with an emphasis on your strengths. The only difference between yourself and me is knowledge. You can learn what I know if you read what I read and try what I try.
Exploit Your Strengths
If you already know a little bit about building web sites I would focus on learning how to program really well. If you already know a little bit about running a business then I would focus more on the marketing side of things. As you continue to grow your knowledge you will find things that come more natural to you. Focus your energy on honing the skills that come natural to you and on the things you enjoy.
Learn Internet Marketing
Learn how to build traffic through SEO. Learn how to make money doing PPC. Learn as much as you can about these two mediums because they're not going away any time soon.
Low Budget Techniques
If you are on a budget you will most likely be spending your time in forums picking up the good info. I usually like to find people I respect in forums and then do searches for all their posts and just spend hours grinding through them all and picking up LOTS of info.
You should also check out some of the affiliate marketing / SEO blogs as these guys are usually pretty good businessmen who know what they're talking about.
Spend as much time as possible learning as much as possible. You're going to want to spend some time going through lots of books, blogs, forums and anything else that gives you more info to build off.
Try to explore all the different ways to bring money in from the Internet. You will find that there are lots of different ways people are making money and you will most likely be more inclined to try a certain method over another. Go with whatever feels best for you and whatever you enjoy doing the most.
Try to become friends with as many people as you can. Find people that share similar values as you and have different strengths than you. Try to avoid annoying people by asking them lots of questions. Don't do what most people do and go, "I noticed you are a top Digg user, can you Digg my stuff?" Rather, try to find ways to help them out with something they are working on and become a person of value for them.
Don't Give Up
It is impossible to fail if you never give up.
Be patient and stay positive. Enjoy the journey of finding a way to build a business online. Good things almost always take time. Google wasn't built in a day. YouTube didn't happen by accident. MySpace didn't get lucky. All these things become popular because they have people behind the scenes working hard each and every day. You never hear about the countless hours of trial and error these people went through to get where they are today, when in reality that is the most important part. If you work hard and constantly reach higher for a long enough time you will eventually find something good.
