Its not cool when you're grammar is worse then theres.

Every time I'm reading something online I always get frustrated when I see people mixing up their contractions, pronouns and grammar in general. It really is sad that people don't learn the basics of the English language and as a result they go on sounding like a 3 year old.

Some common grammatical problems

your vs you're

This is probably the most common problem I see online. It's such a simple one to not mess up on and yet so many people do not know the difference. Your shows ownership for an individual.

The contraction You're is the combination of two words: you and are. You can always replace "you're" with you are, but you can not replace "your" with you are. Try out a simple sentence. Is that your book? Can you replace "your" with "you are"? No. Another example: Your cool. This is the most common mistake - people use "your" instead of "you're". Your cool is basically saying "my ownership/possession of cool". The correct word here is You're: You're cool.

it's vs its

This one usually messes people up so much they just forget about it and skip the apostrophe all together. This one is fairly simple if you understand what each form is representing. "It's" is the contraction of "it is". So every time could replace it's with it is then you are doing it right. For example, it's sweet could be replaced with it is sweet.

"Its" is a pronoun similar to I, He, She or My. Use its when you are showing possession for a noun. For instance, the dog walked away and its puppies came with it.

there, their, they're

"There" refers to location: Go grab the book over there.

"Their" refers to ownership: It was their book.

"They're" is a contraction of "They Are": They're cool people.

then vs than

"Then" is used to describe a time: The boy went home and then owned English.

"Than" is used to compare something: Owning English is far better than sounding like a 3rd grader.

Conclusion

I'm not an English major or anything, but I'm also not a 3rd grader that doesn't know the difference between contractions and pronouns. It just looks terrible and usually takes away credibility when somebody who does understand these basics comes across this slop.

87% of people on the Internet decided to skip 3rd grade "Engrish" so I am here to teach the basics. Please tune in next week for lessons on what a noun is...
