Let's start this off with something probably only 1/2 of Americans know:

I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America,
and to the Republic for which it stands, one Nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.

Millions of people pledge their allegiance to the Republic everyday but yet still call it a Democracy. I suppose they are accurate in calling America a Democracy because that is what it has become; however, it isn't supposed to be this way. There is a reason why the word "Republic" is used in our Pledge of Allegiance and not the word "Democracy". It's because it was never intended for America to be a Democracy.

A Republic and a Democracy are identical in every aspect except one. In a Republic the sovereignty is in each individual person. In a Democracy the sovereignty is in the group.

Let's see what Thomas Jefferson has to say on this:

A democracy is nothing more than mob rule, where fifty-one percent of the people may take away the rights of the other forty-nine.

Yep, that sounds about right. I believe that is how we are running things these days. So what is a Republic supposed to be like?

It seems that what is overlooked by this distinction is that in anything less than a demos-rule [or a democracy] voice is restricted to only one, a few or the many over individual.
